Alex McCracken

Bass Clarinet

Alex grew up in Perth, studying under WASO’s principal clarinettist Allan Meyer at the University of Western Australia. During his time at UWA he won the VOSE concerto competition, the Janet Anderson woodwind award, the Lyn Kan prize for solo performance and the Margaret Bello prize for chamber music. In 2014, after graduating Alex moved to Hobart, receiving a full scholarship to study postgraduate honours under Sydney Symphony associate principal Clarinettist Francesco Celata. After graduating with first class honours, Alex won the 2015 Clarinet Fellowship position with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and moved to Sydney. Alex is now based in Sydney as an active freelance performer. He has appeared with many Australian ensembles including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Opera Australia Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra as well as being a founding member of two chamber ensembles. Alex has studied in masterclasses in Italy, Norway and France during 2016 & 2017, then taking up an Associate-Principal contract with the Turku Philharmonic Orchestra in Finland for a few months in 2018.
